In April 2018, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) released its revised “Guidelines for the Safe Prescribing and Dispensing of Opioids” as a resource. The Colorado Dental, Medical, Nursing, Optometry, Podiatry, and Pharmacy Boards collaborated to develop this policy and provide meaningful guidance for prescribers. This course reviews epidemiology of the opioid epidemic, the “why” of the guidelines, and then details the “who, what and how” of compliance.

-Describe the scope of the current opioid epidemic, its origin, and some of its contributing factors. -Compare and Contrast the effects of Guidelines, best practices, legislation, and expert testimony when opioid prescribing practices are called into question. -Enumerate the specific stop limits for dosage, duration, and formulation. -Outline the best practices of Risk mitigation strategies when the stop limits are exceeded.
