In mid-2018, the Colorado legislature passed SB 18-022, a law which restricts first prescriptions and first refills to new patients, as well as a mandatory PDMP check at first refill. This course reviews the background of the contribution of acute prescriptions to the opioid epidemic, and then reviews the restrictions and the exceptions outlined in this newly enacted law.
-Describe the scope of the current opioid epidemic, its origin, and some of its contributing factors. -Explain how prescribing of opioids in the acute phase can contribute to the adverse outcomes of diversion, addiction, and overdose. -Give the specifics of the restrictions of the law on the first acute opioid prescription and its first refill. -Enumerate the exceptions to the restrictions and the role of clinical judgment.
