Course Summary
Healthcare personnel are at relatively high risk for workplace violence. We serve people who are experiencing extreme emotional stress, and whose judgment and control may be impaired by a variety of factors. Seventy-five percent of U.S. workplace assaults are in healthcare settings. Staff in emergency departments, behavioral health, home healthcare and primary care experience rates of assault in the range of 40-100% per year. This is the program that begins where “de-escalation†leaves off. This program is different from “Active Shooter Training,†(which is also important). It examines behavioral cues that help identify persons likely to act out, and strategies for intervening in ways that present the least likely harm to both them and staff who must deal with them. It addresses practical tactics and legal rights of healthcare workers who must defend themselves in extreme situations. Among topics considered are OSHA guidelines for facility design, organizational policies, staff training and procedures, defense scenarios and the psychology of reacting to sudden violence. Specific examples of protective devices and some personal self-defense techniques are described. This program does not provide self-defense training (which is recommended in OSHA guidelines) but describes parts of what that training should involve.
